That instinct is exactly how a fender-bender turns into a damaged radiator, a bent wheel hub, or a fluid leak that seizes the engine a few kilometres later.

A car that starts and can technically be driven isn't the same as a car that's safe to drive, and the gap between those two is where most towing decisions actually get made wrong. Distance and how the car looks matter far less than what's actually happening underneath it.

Tow it, these five situations aren't judgment calls

• The engine won't start at all, not even a slow crank, could be electrical, could be internal, and driving further won't tell you which
• The temperature gauge is climbing into the red or steam is visible from the bonnet, a hot engine driven further can warp a head or seize entirely
• The car won't move in gear, or makes a grinding or knocking sound when it tries to
• There's been an accident and the car won't move cleanly, or the wheels or suspension look visibly bent or misaligned
• A warning light for oil pressure or coolant is on and staying on, not flickering, this one specifically is worth stopping for immediately rather than nursing it home

Repair on the spot, these usually don't need a tow

• A flat tyre with a usable spare or a quick plug repair possible
• A dead battery that a jump-start brings back to normal cranking
• A blown fuse or a loose terminal a technician can fix in minutes
• Running out of fuel, once fuel is delivered

What actually happens if you drive it anyway

An overheating engine driven another five kilometres to "just get it to a garage" is the single most common way a repairable problem becomes an expensive one, a warped cylinder head or a blown head gasket costs many times more than the tow that would have prevented it. The same logic applies to a wheel bearing making a grinding noise: the noise is the warning, and continuing to drive on it is what turns a bearing replacement into a hub and axle replacement.

What towing actually involves, so there are no surprises

A flatbed tow, where all four wheels come off the ground, is the safer option for anything involving the drivetrain, a stuck gear, or accident damage, since it avoids putting any load through a wheel or axle that might already be compromised. A wheel-lift tow, where only the front or rear axle is lifted, works fine for a simple non-drivetrain issue on a car that can still roll freely. Ask which type is being used for your specific fault rather than assuming, towing a front-wheel-drive car with a stuck gearbox on a wheel-lift rig can cause exactly the damage the tow was meant to avoid.

Distance changes the calculation too

If the nearest trusted mechanic is a five-minute drive and the fault is genuinely minor, driving there carefully can be reasonable. If it's across the city in Bangalore or Chennai traffic, the extra time at low speed, more heat cycles, more gear changes, works against a marginal fault rather than for it. When distance and uncertainty both point the same direction, that's the tow.
