Squealing or grinding sounds when applying brakes are the clearest warning sign — squealing indicates worn brake pad material approaching the metal backing plate, and grinding means metal-on-metal contact is already occurring, damaging your disc rotor. A brake lever or pedal that travels too far before resistance is felt (sometimes called 'spongy' brakes on hydraulic systems) indicates air in the brake fluid or a hydraulic leak. The bike pulling to one side under braking suggests uneven brake pad wear or a seized brake calliper on one wheel. Visible brake pad thickness below 2mm through the calliper inspection window means replacement is overdue. A burning smell after riding in traffic or on a downhill stretch indicates brake drag — the calliper is not fully releasing, causing constant friction and overheating.

Drum brakes are used on the rear wheel of most budget bikes — Hero Splendor, Honda Activa, Bajaj Platina, TVS Jupiter — and on both wheels of older models. They use curved brake shoes that press outward against a rotating drum. Drum brakes require adjustment as the shoes wear (the brake lever cable slack increases), eventual shoe replacement, and occasional drum reconditioning if grooved. They are less susceptible to water ingress than disc brakes. Disc brakes use hydraulic callipers that squeeze brake pads against a rotor (disc). They offer superior stopping power and are standard on mid-to-premium bikes. They require periodic pad replacement, brake fluid changes every 2 years (as fluid absorbs moisture and its boiling point drops), calliper cleaning and lubrication, and disc rotor inspection for scoring or minimum thickness compliance. Never use DOT 3 brake fluid in a system specifying DOT 4 — the difference in boiling point is significant.

The clutch on Indian bikes falls into two categories: cable-operated (manual) and hydraulic. Most popular bikes — Honda Shine, Bajaj Pulsar series, Royal Enfield, Hero Glamour — use a cable-operated multi-plate wet clutch. Clutch slipping (engine revs but bike doesn't accelerate proportionally) indicates worn clutch plates that have lost their friction material. This requires clutch plate replacement — a 1.5–2 hour job at your doorstep. Clutch dragging (bike creeps forward even with clutch lever fully pulled) indicates incorrect cable free play, warped clutch plates, or a damaged clutch basket. Cable-related issues — a seized cable, fraying near the lever, or incorrect free play — are inexpensive to fix and resolve most clutch feel complaints. Hydraulic clutches (KTM, some RE models, premium bikes) occasionally need fluid bleeding when the feel becomes spongy. Most clutch cable issues are preventable with a small drop of lubricant applied at both cable ends every 6,000 km.

Understanding brake service costs helps you avoid being overcharged at garages. Front disc brake pad replacement (labour only): ₹199–₹299. Brake pads themselves cost ₹150–₹500 depending on brand — Brembo, TVS Genuine, EBC, or Chinese alternatives. Always ask what brand pads are being fitted. Rear drum brake shoe replacement (labour): ₹199. Shoes cost ₹80–₹200. Hydraulic brake fluid flush and bleed: ₹299–₹499 including fluid. Clutch cable replacement (labour): ₹149–₹199. Cable cost: ₹100–₹300 depending on OEM or aftermarket. Clutch plate set replacement: ₹799–₹1,499 labour depending on bike. Plates themselves: ₹500–₹2,500 depending on brand and bike. All new Indian bikes with engine capacity above 125cc are mandatorily equipped with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) government regulations. ABS-equipped bikes have wheel speed sensors, an ABS pump, and a modulator — components that require special attention during brake service. Never use brake system cleaner sprays near ABS wheel speed sensors — the chemical can damage the sensor coating. When bleeding hydraulic brakes on ABS-equipped bikes, the ABS module must be activated during the bleed process to purge all air from the ABS pump — a step many local garages skip, leaving residual air in the system.
