A solid (continuous, non-flashing) check engine light indicates a stored fault that requires attention but is not causing immediate active damage. The engine management system has detected a reading outside normal parameters — an oxygen sensor reading outside its expected range, a small evaporative emission leak, or a slightly misfiring cylinder — and has stored a fault code. The car is typically still driveable for short distances. A flashing or blinking check engine light is a different situation entirely. This indicates an active misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter in real time. The unburned fuel entering the catalytic converter at high temperatures can melt the catalyst substrate, destroying a component that costs ₹15,000–₹60,000 to replace. A flashing CEL requires immediate action: reduce engine load (no acceleration, no high RPM), pull over when safe, switch off the engine, and call Fiixup. All cars sold in India after approximately 2005 are equipped with an OBD2 (On-Board Diagnostics 2) port — a standardised 16-pin connector typically located under the dashboard on the driver's side. The engine control unit (ECU) continuously monitors hundreds of sensor values and compares them against expected ranges. When a reading falls outside specification repeatedly, the ECU stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) and illuminates the check engine light. A generic OBD2 scanner (the basic tools many mechanics use) reads only the stored DTC — a 5-character code like P0300 (random misfire detected). P0300–P0304 (Engine Misfire): The most common serious codes. Indicates one or more cylinders are not firing correctly. Causes include worn spark plugs, failed ignition coils, fuel injector issues, or compression loss. A cylinder 1 misfire on a Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai i20, or Honda City is frequently caused by a failed ignition coil — a ₹1,500–₹3,000 repair. P0171 (System Too Lean): Oxygen sensor reports the engine is running too lean — more air than fuel. Common on Maruti Suzuki and Honda cars with vacuum leaks, dirty MAF sensors, or weak fuel pressure. P0420 / P0430 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold): Indicates the catalytic converter is not converting exhaust gases efficiently. May indicate a failing cat, exhaust leak before the downstream oxygen sensor, or an engine-running issue causing it (rich running, misfires). P0440–P0456 (Evaporative Emission Control System): Indicates a small or large fuel vapour leak from the fuel system — often as simple as a loose or faulty fuel cap. This is frequently the cause of a check engine light on otherwise perfectly running cars. P0101–P0103 (MAF Sensor): Mass Air Flow sensor out of range. Causes poor fuel economy, rough idle, and hesitation. Often correctable by cleaning the MAF sensor rather than replacement. P0340 (Camshaft Position Sensor): Common on Hyundai and Kia petrol engines. Causes no-start or intermittent stalling. P0562 (System Voltage Low): Battery or charging system voltage below 11.5V. Often the root cause of multiple other codes appearing simultaneously.
