One of the most common questions bike owners ask is: 'How often should I service my bike?' The answer varies by brand, model, usage pattern, and city. This guide gives you exact service intervals for every popular Indian bike — so you never miss a service again.

Honda Activa (5G, 6G, 7G) Service Schedule

First service: 500–750 km (free at dealership). Second service: 3,000 km or 3 months. Regular interval thereafter: Every 3,000 km or 3 months, whichever comes first. Oil: 10W-30 SL grade mineral oil (Honda recommended). Air filter: Clean every 6,000 km, replace every 12,000 km. Spark plug: Replace every 12,000 km. For heavy city use in stop-and-go Bengaluru or Chennai traffic, shorten oil interval to every 2,500 km.

Royal Enfield (Classic 350, Meteor 350, Himalayan, Hunter 350) Service Schedule

First service: 500 km. Second service: 3,000 km. Third service: 6,000 km. Regular interval: Every 5,000 km after the third service. Oil: 15W-50 SAE grade (Royal Enfield Genuine Oil strongly recommended). Chain: Inspect every 1,500 km, lubricate every 700–800 km. Filter: Replace every 10,000 km. Royal Enfield bikes produce more vibration than Japanese bikes — more frequent nut-and-bolt tightening checks are recommended (every 5,000 km).

Bajaj Pulsar (150, NS160, NS200, Dominar 400) Service Schedule

Pulsar 150/160: Oil every 3,000 km, 20W-40 grade. Pulsar NS200: Every 4,000 km, 10W-40 semi-synthetic recommended. Dominar 400: Every 5,000 km, 15W-50 or 10W-50 semi-synthetic. All Bajaj bikes benefit from air filter cleaning every 6,000 km and spark plug inspection every 8,000 km.

KTM (Duke 200, Duke 390, Adventure 390) Service Schedule

First service: 1,000 km (critical — do not skip). Regular interval: Every 5,000 km. Oil: 10W-40 fully synthetic (Motorex or equivalent recommended by KTM). KTM engines are high-revving and heat-sensitive — use only recommended synthetic oil and never stretch intervals. Coolant: Check every 5,000 km, change every 2 years. Chain: Clean and lubricate every 500–700 km — more frequently if riding in rain.

Yamaha (FZ-S, R15 V4, MT-15, Fascino 125) Service Schedule

Yamaha FZ-S: Every 4,000 km, 10W-40 semi-synthetic. Yamaha R15 V4: Every 4,500 km, 10W-40 fully synthetic. Yamaha MT-15: Every 5,000 km, 10W-40 semi-synthetic. Yamaha Fascino 125: Every 3,000 km, 10W-30 mineral. Yamaha's Blue Core engines are fuel-efficient but require clean air filters — service every 6,000 km.

TVS (Apache RTR 160/200, Ntorq 125, Jupiter) Service Schedule

TVS Jupiter/Ntorq 125: Every 3,000 km, 10W-30 mineral. TVS Apache RTR 160: Every 3,000–4,000 km, 10W-30 or 10W-40. TVS Apache RTR 200 4V: Every 4,000 km, 10W-40 semi-synthetic. Apache RTR series benefits from an oil analysis — if oil turns very dark quickly, consider switching to semi-synthetic.

City vs Highway Riding: How It Affects Service Intervals

City riding — especially in Bengaluru and Chennai with heavy stop-and-go traffic — is significantly harder on engines than highway riding. The engine runs at idle for extended periods, building up heat without the cooling effect of moving air. Short trips don't allow the engine to fully warm up and burn off moisture that accumulates in oil. If you ride primarily in city traffic, use the lower end of your service interval range. If you primarily ride highways, you can comfortably use the upper end.
