A dead car battery is one of the most common vehicle emergencies in India — and one of the most stressful if you don't know what to do. This guide gives you the complete, safe procedure for jump starting a car, specific precautions for modern vehicles with sensitive electronics, and clarity on when to call a professional instead of attempting it yourself.

What You'll Need to Jump Start a Car

  • A set of jumper cables (minimum 6-gauge, preferably 4-gauge) OR a portable lithium jump starter pack
  • A working vehicle with a charged battery (same or larger voltage — 12V for all standard Indian cars)
  • Safety glasses (optional but recommended)
  • Gloves (optional)

The Correct Order to Connect Jumper Cables — Never Get This Wrong

The order of connection is critical. Connecting in the wrong sequence can cause sparks near the battery, blow fuses, or damage the ECU. Follow this exact sequence every time:

  • Step 1: RED cable → POSITIVE (+) terminal of the DEAD battery
  • Step 2: RED cable → POSITIVE (+) terminal of the GOOD battery
  • Step 3: BLACK cable → NEGATIVE (–) terminal of the GOOD battery
  • Step 4: BLACK cable → UNPAINTED METAL ENGINE COMPONENT on the dead car (NOT the negative terminal of the dead battery)

Why connect the final black cable to metal, not the dead battery's negative terminal? Batteries emit hydrogen gas. Connecting to the terminal creates a spark risk near the gas. Connecting to a metal engine part grounds the circuit safely away from the battery.

After Connecting — Starting Procedure

Once cables are connected correctly, start the working car and let it run for 3–5 minutes. This allows some charge to transfer to the dead battery. Then attempt to start the dead car. If it starts, immediately disconnect cables in REVERSE order: black from metal, black from good battery, red from good battery, red from previously-dead battery. Drive for at least 20–30 minutes to allow the alternator to recharge the battery.

Modern Cars and Jump Start Risks

Cars manufactured after 2015 — including the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Nexon, Maruti Baleno, and virtually every other modern Indian car — have complex electronics including multiple ECUs, ADAS systems, and sensitive sensors. A voltage spike from improperly connected cables or a faulty booster can damage these systems and cost ₹10,000–₹50,000 or more to repair. This is why Fiixup uses professional lithium booster packs that deliver regulated, spike-free current.

When NOT to Jump Start — Call a Professional Instead

  • The battery case is visibly swollen, cracked, or leaking — this indicates internal failure and the battery could rupture
  • You smell a strong sulphuric (rotten egg) odour near the battery
  • The battery has visible corrosion covering the terminals — clean first or call for help
  • Your car has a Stop-Start system (auto start-stop feature) — these require special procedures
  • The car attempted multiple failed starts in quick succession — the starter motor needs rest
